The primary school in Zákamenné is located in the dynamically growing region of Orava, where there is a high proportion of young families and a rising birth rate. This regional trend leads to a constant increase in the number of pupils, which poses a challenge to the school and the municipality to ensure sufficient capacity for all pupils.

The problem

Due to the continued growth in the number of children in the village, the primary school is already struggling with a shortage of places in mainstream classes. In order to avoid the introduction of a two-shift operation, the school has had to create temporary classes in specialised classrooms. This trend will continue in the coming years and it is therefore necessary to expand the school's capacity to be ready to accommodate all pupils.

Objective

The aim of the project is to expand the capacity of the primary school by 7 classes, which means 191 new places for pupils. The new capacity will be created by the extension and renovation of one of the existing primary school buildings. The expansion also includes the enlargement of the school canteen and the procurement of modern equipment that will ensure quality education for the growing number of pupils.

Duration / Progress

Project implementation began with the preparation of design documents in March 2023. From October 2024, construction works commenced. Completion of the construction works, building approval and delivery of material and technical equipment is planned by the end of April 2026.

Result

Thanks to the grant support, the Primary School in Zákamenné will avoid the need to set up a two-shift operation and at the same time significantly improve the conditions for education for all children in the village and solve the problem of school capacity for several years to come.

This project is a response to the ever-increasing number of pupils, which requires an expansion of the school's capacity and improvement of the infrastructure.

What the project will deliver:
  • Elimination of temporary classrooms: by creating new mainstream classrooms, temporary solutions will no longer have to be used in specialized classrooms. These classrooms will once again serve their original purpose of teaching specialised subjects.

  • Wheelchair access: As part of the school extension, a lift will be built to provide wheelchair access for all pupils, teachers and visitors to the school.

  • Extension of the school canteen: The capacity of the school canteen, which has long been insufficient to meet the needs of the school, will be increased, thus creating better conditions for pupils' meals.

  • Better education: The new modern facilities will enable better quality education and remove barriers to access to education for all children in the village.

The implementation of this project is crucial for the development of the educational process in Zákamenné. It will bring better quality education for children, who will have better conditions for their development, and at the same time will contribute to the improvement of school services for the whole community.
